A Zen master had an old book which contained the teachings of seven generations of masters. He passed it on to his best student.
The student said: I received your Zen without writing, and am satisfied with it as it is. The master answered, Even so, you may keep it as a symbol of receiving the teaching.
They walked near a fire. The student threw the book into the fire. The master yelled, What are you doing?
The student shouted back, What are you saying?
